Hitendra Patel IXL Center  

Dr. Hitendra Patel
Managing Director

Hitendra is the Managing Director of the IXL Center & Chair of the Innovation and Growth Program at the Hult International Business School.

Hitendra was a senior leader and co-founder of Monitor Group’s Innovation Practice and was responsible for Asia and Latin America. Prior to Monitor, he was a senior manager at Arthur D. Little. As a management consultant, he has made lasting impact with all types of companies by helping them identify new engines for growth and develop their own capacity to innovate.

Hitendra has also helped and published articles at the national and region level on the topic of economic development in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Singapore, US and the UK.

Prior to consulting, Hitendra worked at Motorola in the portable energy space and is the owner of six patents. He is also a founder of various venture-backed companies.

Hitendra is the co-author of 101 Innovation Breakthroughs and The State of Innovation at the Firm Level in Singapore and in the process of writing his third book on Thinking and Acting Differently to Make Innovation Real.

Hitendra has an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Iowa State University.


Ronald Ron Jonash IXL Center

Ron is currently a senior partner at the IXL Center and at the Spinnaker Group (a venture capital firm). He is on the faculty of the Hult International Business School, and on the Advisory board of Arthur D. Little Inc. (ADL). He was most recently a senior partner of the Monitor Group where he founded and led their Innovation practice and was founder of IMI (Innovation Management Inc.). For 20 years he was the managing director of the Technology and Innovation Management Practice for Arthur D. Little worldwide. He was also Chief Innovation Officer and served on their Technology Investment Board and Management Education Institute Board.

Ron's specialties are the strategic management of innovation, technology and R&D to create and capture maximum value. With degrees in Economics and Engineering Systems from Princeton University where he also received his Master’s Degree in Architecture and Design, he has led numerous executive leadership and development programs at major companies and has been a visiting lecturer at Rice, Wharton and Columbia universities and the Hult International Business School.

Ron has conducted extensive work on metrics and performance measures in these areas through both economic upturns and downturns over the last 30 years focusing on risk, opportunity and options management across a wide breadth of industries and geographies. This work is reflected in many articles as well as in a book published in 2000 titled The Innovation Premium focusing on the management of innovation and the creation and capture of innovation premiums and shareholder value. Best practices in technology sourcing and partnering were also captured in an Economist book he coauthored in 1993 entitled Leveraging Technology in the New Global Company. He is currently writing a new book on innovation management titled Beyond Eureka: Thinking and Acting Differently to make Innovation Real and Sustainable.

Ron’s consulting experience in the last ten years has focused primarily on helping companies create and develop new options for growth and profit improvement. This work has usually focused on building stronger pipelines and new business models, while managing the significant risks and uncertainties associated with these options and the frequent need to collaborate with new partners up and down the value chain.


Tyler McNally IXL Center

Tyler is a Senior Project Leader at the Center for Innovation, Excellence and Leadership (IXL Center). He is responsible for project integration, advisory, and client management. In addition, he is an instructor and facilitator of IXL’s Innovation and Growth courses and workshops. Tyler is also a major contributor to IXL’s innovation content, including innovation research, articles, white papers, and curriculum.

Prior to IXL, Tyler was a case team leader for the Monitor Group, a global strategy consulting firm. He has worked with public and private sector clients on a range of issues related to national economic development, innovation management, corporate strategy, corporate investment and finance, new product development, and market entry strategy.

Tyler led a number of engagements as part of Monitor’s Middle East North Africa office including the development and implementation of strategies to stimulate innovation, entrepreneurship and foreign direct investment. In this capacity, Tyler worked many major government ministries, semi-public institutions, and private corporations in Saudi Arabia, Northern Iraq and the UAE. He also led a number of private sector projects for companies operating in the information technology, telecommunications, mining, basic materials, and private equity industries.

Prior to this, Tyler was affiliated with Monitor’s innovation practice helping firms grow existing businesses, develop new growth opportunities and build internal innovation management capabilities through focused project-level engagements and broader capacity building initiatives spanning entire business units and organizations.

Tyler is a contributing author to the book, 101 Innovation Breakthroughs.

Tyler has a B.A. in Economics from the Honors Program at Boston College.

Scott comes to the IXL Center as an independent search consultant having worked with senior executives from many top brand and innovative companies in Technology, Professional Services and Consumer Products. He has over 20 years experience as an executive in the human resources business both internally developing companies and externally assisting organizations in their senior-level-recruitment and development. He has established himself as a leader in the growing search for talented executive in the fields of Corporate Innovation and Sustainability.

Scott has served as an executive coach while also working with various early stage ventures who are building entire innovative management teams for the first time. He was previously, Director of Executive Staffing for Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) world wide and prior to that, he was with Vedior/Select Appointments as Vice President of Business Development and National Recruitment. At Vedior he recruited the senior level personnel, oversaw the staffing of 42 offices nationally and in the UK during the company’s expansion from $45 million to $800 million in revenue and is now part of the largest specialty provider worldwide.

Scott has a BA in Psychology from Lake Forest College; studies towards MBA at Northeastern University; Certificate from IXL Center on innovation excellence and leadership; Hill & Barlow Employment Labor Law seminars; Lominger Leadership Architect Competency; Numerous sales and negotiating seminars and management training programs; and former Northeastern University Head Tennis Coach, NCAA Division I.


Phillip Sparks IXL Center

Phillip is a Knowledge Management and Information Assurance advisor and founder of CertME process to ensure Human Capital and business processes are optimized in organizations by human soft skills development and process experience. As Information Assurance expert with over 18 years experience, he has consulted and setup training and behavior based awareness in Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance programs for Financial, Telecom, and Military/Government organizations in the US, Europe and Middle East.

Phillip has a wide range of education with BS Liberal Arts/Physics from Centre College, BS Electrical Engineering, Masters Certification in Telecommunication from Air Force Institute of Technology, and has studied MIS at Boston University before switching to get a MBA from University of Maryland European Division. Prior to turning his focus to consulting and training, Phillip was a Officer/Commander in the US Army and European site manager for Litton PRC/Northrop Grumman. He is also a Certified Information System Auditor and Security Manager (CISA, CISM).

Flávio’s portfolio of projects is related to Innovation Management, Strategy, Marketing, Distribution and International Business. He has more than 9 years of experience in international management consulting firms and multinational corporations, such as: The Monitor Group, Arthur D. Little Inc, Bunge and Banco Itaú as well as start-ups.

Flávio’s projects were related to several segments of the economy: mining, cement, petrochemical, food industry, agribusiness, software, telecom and financial institutions

Conducted several projects related to Innovation Management - innovation assessment, strategic realignment, business process redesign, organizational redesign, portfolio management, technology roadmap, idea management, innovation metrics and competency maps.

He has also more than 10 projects related to development of entrance strategy, distribution strategy, market assessment, market segmentation, development of marketing plan, investment portfolio management for companies in Latin America and Europe.

Julius also has more than 5 years extensive experience in IT consulting projects developing and implementing enterprise applications in the Czech Republic and in the Philippines. He has led and managed IT project implementations in several areas including financial services, tax systems and e-commerce.

Julius has a B.S. in Electronics Engineering and a M.S. in RadioElectronic Systems from the Czech Technical University in Prague. He also has an MBA from the Hult International Business School in Cambridge, MA. He speaks several languages including Filipino, English and Czech.


Szabolcs Szabi Patay IXL Center

Szabi has been working as a consultant in various IT and information management related projects in financial services and in the public sector. His experience includes insights from IT strategy, risk management and disaster recovery planning projects. His experience working with and managing teams of several nationalities in Europe gives him a unique European perspective in approaching problems.

Szabi' current focus of interest is how to set up frameworks to measure innovation. He has M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary. His major was next generation networks where he conducted research on combining different communication services to create an integrated mobile communication solution. Besides his native Hungarian, he speaks English and French.


Joanna Chua IXL Center

Joanna is the Operations and Project Manager at the IXL Center. She is responsible for the day-to-day activities of IXL as well as some student-led projects. She has worked in various industries namely IT, Electronics, Education and Retail/Wholesale.

Joanna has more than 6 years experience working in operations and supply chain. As operations manager for an electronics company, she streamlined the processes of various departments that improved employee performance and increased customer satisfaction boosting sales and improving inventory turnover. At the IXL, she is responsible for the overall management for course schedule delivery, recruiting and logistics.

Joanna also has more than 4 years experience in project management. She has handled various projects on software systems for SMEs, modularized electronic hardware designs and research studies.

Joanna has a B.S. in Management Information Systems from the Ateneo de Manila University. She also has an MBA from the Hult International Business School. She is fluent in several languages including English, Filipino, Mandarin and Hokkien.


Milagros Masini IXL Center

Milagros manages the Speaker Series, Innovation Conferences and Innovation Panel events at the IXL Center. She has run dozens of events, recruited world-class innovation speakers from Fortune 500 corporation, leading consulting firms and academia and created the “space” for innovation practitioners and leaders in the Boston area. She manages all aspects of the events business of IXL.

Milagros interest and work has been in the behaviors and dynamics of human system within family units and more recently in organization. She brings a unique perspective and new approaches through her work as an educator and marriage counselor.

Milagros has a Bachelor degree in Marketing from University of Puerto Rico and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iowa State University. She is fluent in Spanish. She has traveled across the globe from Brazil, Cambodia, China, Dubai, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea, Mexico, to Singapore.



Marc Chason

Marc Chason was a Director in Motorola Labs, a part of Motorola Inc., where he was employed for 23 years in various capacities. Working primarily in Motorola R&D activities, his roles included engineering management, strategic visioning, technology transfers and new technology/business development.

Innovative technologies developed in his lab have shipped in millions of Motorola cell phone products. He is the holder of 23 US patents and a Dan Noble Fellow, Motorola’s highest technical honor.

A recognized industry expert with over 30 publications, he was a member of the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) Technical Committee and Research Committee.

Marc Chason holds a Masters degree in Materials Science and a Bachelors degree in Engineering Science, both from SUNY Stony Brook.


Makarand Chipalkatti

Dr. Makarand “Chips” Chipalkatti is the Corporate Innovation Manager for Osram Sylvania. He is a central force in accelerating the company’s innovation process, which in turn builds business.

He is also responsible for facilitating funding from external sources. He serves as the Chairman of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association’s (NEMA) Solid State Lighting Section, coordinating with the Department of Energy (DOE) in the Next Generation Lighting Industry Alliance effort, and collaborating with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab and RPI Lighting Research Center.

Dr. Makarand Chipalkatti holds a Doctorate degree in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology.


Barnaby Donlon

Since joining Palladium (formerly Balanced Scorecard Collaborative) in 1999, Barnaby has served as a consultant and advisor to dozens of leading organizations such as AXA Financial, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Cadbury-Schweppes, Capital One, Caterpillar, International Monetary Fund, Lockheed Martin Corporation, McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), Terex Corporation, Tiffany & Co., T. Currently, in addition to his work with clients, Barnaby serves as Palladium’s strategy practice leader for the New York region and is a frequent writer and speaker on various topics of strategy, innovation, and performance management. In 2006 he established the firm’s emerging practice on Innovation Management, which includes a partnership with Monitor Group and the Center for Innovation Excellence and Leadership (IXL Center).

Prior to management consulting, Mr. Donlon spent four years in Asia working for the Japanese government as an advisor on international relations. He holds a Master of Arts in Law & Diplomacy, including a certificate in strategic management from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University (with course work at Harvard Business School) and a BA from Bates College.

Semyon Kogan

Sam has been the President & COO of GEN3 Partners since December 2003 and is responsible for the firm’s daily operations. He has been in innovation consulting for more than 25 years and has extensive experience in scientific research and development, having led research programs at ICI and Plastpolymer Corp.

Before joining GEN3, he was COO and co-founder of Pragmatic Vision International in 2000. In addition to overseeing the firm’s operations, he also helped develop client management strategies in the U.S., Europe and the Pacific Rim. Prior to Pragmatic Vision, he was the director of innovation consulting services at Invention Machine Corp.

Sam has a Ph.D. in material science from the Institute of Macromolecular Science, Leningrad, Russia and an MS Cum Laude in Applied Physics from Polytechnic University in Leningrad. He is the author of more than 50 articles and patents. He is also a certified TRIZ and Six-Sigma specialist

Iason Onassis is a Senior Director and Managing Consultant at Philips. He heads the Innovation Consulting team within the Philips Industry Consulting unit. This is a global team focusing on Innovation consulting for Philips and 3rd parties. It is based in the Netherlands with further Innohubs in Singapore and in Helsinki. It works with companies in developing their innovation strategy, improving innovation capabilities, creating breakaway innovations and becoming end-user driven. Furthermore, in its Innohubs, clients can --in an Open Innovation approach-- develop and test new concepts in quick cycles.

Iason was previously an Associate Partner at Monitor Innovation responsible for acquisition and development of client relationships and a Principal at Arthur D. Little, where he was responsible for the Technology and Innovation Management practice in the Netherlands. Prior to his consulting career, he worked for several years at Fokker Aircraft.

Iason works on topics of strategy and innovation with large companies across industries. He helps companies identify new areas of growth, make informed technology choices, and build capabilities in innovation. Furthermore he coaches boards and management teams in dealing with innovation in global organizations.

Iason has taught Management of Technology and Innovation at the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University and as a guest lecturer at other universities. He speaks at conferences and publishes articles on the subject of innovation and R&D in leading publications such as the Handbook of Business Strategy and Research and Technology Management. He holds a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the Delft University of Technology and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.


Dr. Jonothan Rowe

Jonathan currently holds the position of Senior Director Intellectual Property and Portfolio Strategy for Amarin Pharma Inc. In this role he is accountable for the company’s IP strategy and innovation around its portfolio. He is also accountable for growing the value of the portfolio as well as the Phase IIIB clinical program.

Jonathan was the SVP of Strategy and COO of Gene Express, a small molecular diagnostic company, and has held numerous integral positions at Pfizer dating back to 1998. He has served as Senior Director of Worldwide Pharmaceutical Sciences in Pfizer's Global R&D Group. His previous positions at Pfizer included Director of Intellectual Property Strategy Management and Clinical Director of the Cardiovascular Risk Factors Group where he designed, developed and managed phase IIIB and IV clinical studies, and led the strategic medical input into the marketing and commercial development of Lipitor. Prior to joining Pfizer, he was a scientific advisor for the law firm of Kaye, Scholar where he provided scientific support for IP litigation in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry.

Jonathan has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and an MS in Molecular Biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM). He also has an MA in Reproductive Endocrinology from State University of New York at Binghamton. He has published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals and has served as a consultant on the topics of Innovation and Strategy Implementation.


Irina Sigalovsky

Irina helps GEN3’s clients build a culture of systematic innovation through innovation leadership training. She is working with Fortune 500 companies such as General Electric, Siemens, Intel, Alcoa, Unilever and has an in-depth knowledge of the TRIZ-based G3:ID methodology of problem identification and problem solving. She is an experienced facilitator and developer of innovation educational materials. She also continues to contribute to the theoretical development of G3:ID methodology.

Prior to GEN3, Irina received Helen Carr Peake Research Prize, awarded for outstanding bioengineering research by the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics for pioneering a novel approach that combined several state-of-the-art MRI methodologies to study the neural architecture of the brain in living humans. She has an extensive teaching experience at such leading educational institutions as MIT, Boston University and Harvard University and her interdisciplinary education and experience provide her with unique skills to effectively communicate and understand problems across various scientific and engineering disciplines and industries.

Irina holds a BS degree in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University and a PhD degree from MIT and Harvard Medical School in Health Sciences and Technology. She is a Level 3 certified TRIZ practitioner by the International TRIZ Association.



Dr. Stephen Hodges

Steve joined Hult International Business School as Chairman of the Board in January 2006 and was elected President in August 2006. He has a strong background in international business. Before coming to Hult, he ran several large businesses and worked in a number of different countries: Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Taiwan, Spain, Germany, Sweden, and the United States as well as his home country, the United Kingdom.

Prior to joining the business school, Steve was the General Manager, Credit Cards for Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong, overseeing a multi-billion dollar portfolio and a major driver of the bank's profits. During his time with Standard Chartered, he held a number of other important positions and was heavily involved in several major acquisitions undertaken by the bank.

Steve started his career with McKinsey & Company in London, where he was an associate principal. He served a number of financial institutions and technology companies across Europe and Asia, working closely with their senior management. While at McKinsey, he specialized in establishing new businesses for his clients. He led the establishment of several new Internet companies in the United Kingdom as well as a credit card company in Spain.

Steve holds a Ph.D. from Manchester University, and an MA from Cambridge University. He completed two years of post-doctorate research in electronic engineering with AT&T research in Cambridge and is the co-author of several patents in data communication. In his spare time, Steve is passionate about football and supports Tottenham Hotspur whom he watches whenever he can find the time to be in London.

Mark Turrell

Mark is the CEO and co-founder of Imaginatik, a software and services company specializing in tapping into the brainpower of tens to tens of thousands of people to solve problems. His original Ph.D. research at Cass Business School investigated the use of collaborative technologies, and he pioneered the study of software server log data to track actual usage, rather than interviews and survey data. With Imaginatik, he and his team developed many of the fundamental concepts behind collaborative innovation and problem solving.

Mark advises major global firms on leveraging the 'collective genius' of a workforce to solve large-scale problems, working closely with Imaginatik's Global 500 clients including Chevron, Pfizer, Whirlpool, and Xerox. He is committed to making change on a global scale, and is driving Imaginatik's initiative to work with nonprofits and NGOs to work on world problems, such as water, energy, poverty and waste. His two major achievements to date include Imaginatik's award of Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum in 2008, and taking Imaginatik public on the London Stock Exchange (AIM: imtk.L).

Mark graduated in Business Studies from Cass Business School in London, with a specialization in marketing. He conducted post-graduate studies at the ESCP in Paris, following the newly created EMB program, specializing in International Business & Finance, and then at the TU-Berlin where he studied Production, Controlling & Logistics. He worked on his doctorate at Cass Business School on the topic of critical mass and diffusion of collaborative technologies - and used his uncompleted thesis as the conceptual foundation of the company that was to become Imaginatik plc.
